Android Version History - Android Introduction - Part - 02

 


Android devices are now available in each and every corner of the world. It is one of the best and most common  smart phone platform containing 75% of the smart phone market. There are over 600 million handsets actively used in worldwide.

In recent past there were no any open standard for mobile platforms. There were several unique operating systems for Nokia, Sony Ericsson etc such as Symbian OS.  The Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of technology companies including Google, device manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung, wireless carriers such as Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile, and chipset makers such as Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, unveiled itself, with a goal to develop open standards for mobile devices. Android beta version was released in November 2007 and it was commercially released as Android 1.0 in September 2008. Since its first release Android rapidly developing to add new features and fix the identified bugs by Google and Open Handset Alliance.  Android versions developed under several code names according to the alphabetical order.They are:

  • Donut
  • Eclair
  • Froyo
  • Gingerbread
  • Honeycomb
  • Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Jelly Bean

Android beta


The beta version of Android released on 5th November 2007 as a mobile device platform built on the Linux kernel version 2.6 and then after Software Development Kit (SDK) released in 12th November 2007.

Android 1.0



Android mobile platform commercially launched in 22 October 2008 as Android 1.0 with the device HTC Dream.


Android 1.1 



Android 1.1 released in 9th February 2009 with new API and several new features. It was only available for HTC Dream device.


Android 1.5 (Cupcake)



Android 1.5 released with the name "Cupcake" in 30th April 2009. It was included UI amendments and new features based on Linux Kernel 2.6.27


Android 1.6 (Donut)



Android 1.6 released with SDK 2.7 in 15 September 2009 with the name "Donut" based on Linux Kernel 2.6.29.   It includes a redesigned search framework that provides a quick, effective, and consistent way for users to search across multiple sources such as browser bookmarks & history, contacts, and the web directly from the home screen.


Android 2.0/2.1 (Eclair)



Android 2.0/2.1 released in 3rd December 2009 with hardware optimization, improved Google Maps 3.1.2, change the UI with a new browser and support for HTML5, the new list of contacts, support flash for the camera 3/2 MP, digital zoom, and Bluetooth 2.1. 


Android 2.2.x (Froyo)




Android 2.2 named as "Froyo" released in 20 May 2010. There phone, applications launcher, and Browser have dedicated shortcuts on the Home Screen, making it easy to access them from any of the 5 home screen panels. And also it has improved security with the addition of numeric pin or alpha-numeric password options to unlock device. Exchange administrators can enforce password policy across devices


Android 2.3.x (Gingerbread)




Android 2.3.x released on 6th December 2010 Linux Kernel 2.6.35. This user interface is refined in many ways across the system, making it easier to learn, faster to use, and more power-efficient. A simplified visual theme of colors against black brings vividness and contrast to the notification bar, menus, and other parts of the UI. Changes in menus and settings make it easier for the user to navigate and control the features of the system and device.


Android 3.x (Honeycomb)


Android 3.0 Android platform known as "Honeycomb" was released on 22 February 2011 under Linux Kernel 2.6.36 which specifically optimized for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets. It introduces a brand new, truly virtual and “holographic” UI design, as well as an elegant, content-focused interaction model.


Android 4.0.x (Ice Cream Sandwich)



Android 4.0 well known as "Ice Cream Sandwich" released on 19th October 2011 builds on the things people love most about Android. Its easy for multitasking, rich notifications, customizable home screens, re-sizable widgets, and deep interactivity. And also it adds powerful new ways of communicating and sharing.


Android 4.1/4.2 (Jelly Bean)



Android 4.1/4.2 known as "Jelly Bean" released in 27th June 2012 based in Linux Kernel 3.0.31.

Android Jelly Bean, is the fastest and smoothest version of Android yet. Jelly Bean improves on the simplicity and beauty of Android 4.0, and introduces a new Google search experience on Android.

Everything in Jelly Bean feels fast, fluid, and smooth. Moving between home screens and switching between apps is effortless, like turning pages in a book. Jelly Bean features improved performance throughout the system, including faster orientation changes, faster responses when switching between recent apps, and smoother and more consistent rendering across the system through vsync and triple buffering. Jelly Bean has more reactive and uniform touch responses, and makes your device even more responsive by boosting the device's CPU instantly when user touch the screen, and turns it down when user don't need it to improve battery life.
